SiC ceramic membranes are manufactured in several forms to suit different applications:

Multi-channel Tubular Membranes: The most common form. Membrane elements have multiple parallel channels (e.g., 19-channel, 37-channel). High mechanical strength, resistant to backwashing. Suitable for various industrial wastewaters and high-solids liquids.

Honeycomb Ceramic Membranes: Similar to diesel particulate filter (DPF) structures, offering high filtration area. Commonly used for gas purification and large-scale water treatment projects.

Flat Sheet Membranes: Single plate-like structures, easy to assemble into membrane stacks with lower energy consumption. Commonly used in Membrane Bioreactors (MBR) for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

Main Application Areas

Based on their exceptional stability, SiC ceramic membranes are primarily used for challenging applications that traditional filtration materials struggle with:

1.Difficult Industrial Wastewater Treatment: e.g., oilfield produced water, steel cold-rolling wastewater, textile dyeing wastewater. These streams typically contain high oil/grease levels, high temperatures, or complex chemical compositions.

2.Drinking Water Advanced Treatment: As a pretreatment for ultrafiltration (UF)/reverse osmosis (RO), effectively removing bacteria, viruses, and colloids, providing stable effluent water quality (SDI).

3.Seawater Desalination Pretreatment: Replacing traditional sand filters or multimedia filters, providing higher quality, more stable feed water to the RO system, significantly extending RO membrane life.

4.High-Temperature Gas Filtration: Used in chemical and metallurgical processes for direct capture of dust and hazardous substances at high temperatures.

5.Food/Pharmaceutical Industries: For separation, concentration, and clarification of high-value-added products.

Considerations & Limitations

Higher Cost: The initial capital cost of SiC ceramic membranes is typically significantly higher than that of traditional polymer membranes. This is currently the main factor limiting wider adoption.

Specific Chemical Sensitivity: While resistant to strong acids and alkalis, they are not resistant to hydrofluoric acid (HF). Special attention is required in applications involving fluorine-containing chemicals.

Operational Requirements: Although structurally robust, proper installation and operation guidelines must be followed to avoid damage from severe thermal or mechanical shock.
