Silicon carbide (SiC) is a man-made mineral with high hardness, excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, and superior high-temperature resistance.

Silicon carbide has a hardness of 9.4 (Mohs hardness 9.4/Knoop hardness 2600).

It exhibits high thermal conductivity and strength at high temperatures (at 1000℃, the strength of silicon carbide is 7.5 times that of alumina (Al₂O₃)). Silicon carbide has an elastic modulus of 410 GPa, its strength does not decrease below 1600℃, and it does not melt at normal pressure but decomposes at 2700℃.
